Learning objectives
- Use divisibility rules for 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9 and 10.
- Decide quickly whether a number divides another.
Key ideas
A number is divisible by 2 if its last digit is even; by 3 if the sum of its digits is divisible by 3; by 4 if its last two digits form a number divisible by 4; by 5 if it ends in 0 or 5; by 6 if it is divisible by both 2 and 3; by 9 if the sum of its digits is divisible by 9; and by 10 if it ends in 0.
Worked example
Is 4,725 divisible by 9? 4 + 7 + 2 + 5 = 18, and 18 is divisible by 9, so yes.
Practice
- Is 3,462 divisible by 6?
- Is 7,128 divisible by 4?
- Find a 3-digit number divisible by both 5 and 9.
